Can I transpose the songs? Tips for teachers:

  • Candidates may present songs from the corresponding male/female grade syllabus – these are treated as accepted benchmarked repertoire and not as Free Choice Pieces
  • Candidates may transpose songs into different keys in order to suit their vocal range, so long as all other outcomes (eg. melodic and rhythmic content, lyrics, tempo, length etc.) remain the same. Candidates must supply a transposed backing track which is the same as the official RSL backing track with no further adaptations but transposed into the new key. Again these are treated as benchmarked repertoire and not as Free Choice Pieces
  • Technical Exercises must be performed as per the male/female syllabus selected overall (ie. it is not possible to ‘mix and match’ exercises from both syllabuses). However, the stipulated starting notes and backing tracks for technical exercises (which are often different for each gender) can be delivered at any octave to suit individual ranges
